Cruising The Internet (Safety)
Project Title: Cruisin’ the Internet Safely
Software Used: Internet
Subject and Grade Level: any
Standards: 12.1.8, 12.2.4, 12.2.5, 12.3.1
Suggestions: I use this at the beginning of the year to review Internet safety rules with my students. I try to think of a different theme each year, but next year I plan on using the Cars movie to have students create a bulletin board based on safety.
Materials needed: Construction paper, markers, scissors, etc.
Lesson Plans/Directions: The beginning of the year I always go over a few guidelines for using the Internet responsibly. After I present the basic guidelines, I assign one of my classes to create a bulletin board synthesizing the information that we’ve discussed (usually the freshmen since this is the first time I’ve had them as students). This year I will be using the movie Cars as my theme. Students will make “highway signs” warning Internet travelers of upcoming danger. I will also have them create a “Tow Mater” with a contact for emergency painted on the side of the tow truck. The contact will direct students to parents, a teacher, or counselor if the student is approached on the Internet (or knows of a friend that may be in danger because of someone they met on-line). The back of the bulletin board will be designed to look like a highway.
