The Place of Relaxation
Oh, man this place is so relaxing. If you need relaxation or just want to get away for a few days or just a few hours, I know the perfect place. Victoria Springs is the place for fishing, camping, RELAXING, and many other things. Located just seven miles north of Merna, or six miles east of Anselmo,
is a beautiful park called Victoria Springs. It gets its name from the natural springs in the water that actually has a therapeutic value. Each spring has a different value that can help with different problems. Its water was so fresh the original homesteader bottled and sold it.
It was famous for making tiredness go away, for relaxing muscles, and even for helping to cure illnesses. The park was originally a homestead by Charles R. Matthews. He was born in Virginia and stayed there until 1874 when he moved to Custer County. In the same year he bought land and built two log cabins. He was a judge and the first postmaster in Custer County. The cabins, which are still there today, were built with the doors facing each other. In southern states many houses were built facing each other and Matthews used it with his cabins. One cabin was his home and the other was the first post office of Custer County. Later Matthews built cedar walls around his homestead and made it into a fort to protect him self from the Sioux uprisings in the land. He also hired more men and got rifles and other guns to help fight against the Sioux. The walls are no longer there though. The only things still there are the cabins and the original fountain from a spring. If you are still wondering why this place is so great here is a list of fun activities enjoyed by campers and visitors. Camping, fishing, reunions, parties, going out on the lake with paddleboats, and having picnics are all the fun activities people do here. There is a shower house on the land to bathe in the waters of the springs and there are cabins that have two bedrooms, and a kitchenette.
The cabins are right on the waters edge and you can just think about getting up in the morning and looking out the window to see a lake right there. You can just walk down a slight hill and go fishing right in front of your cabin. Fishing contests take place at the lake every year. They have a contest to see who gets the biggest fish and who can get the littlest fish. The first place winner gets tackle or a gift certificate, second place winner gets a slightly smaller prize, and sometimes the third place winner gets a prize. These contests usually take place during memorial weekend. If you have any questions you can mail to HC 69, Box 117, Anselmo, Nebraska, 68813. Also there is a phone number to reach the office of Victoria Springs, which is (308) 749-2235.
